Women's Basketball off to a Historic Start

Women's Basketball moves to 8-0 and is off to their best start in a decade

GLENVILLE, W. Va. – The undefeated Fairmont State women's basketball team (8-0, 5-0 Mountain East Conference play) clinched their eighth win against Glenville State University (6-3, 2-2 MEC) in an 88-70 victory on Wednesday (Dec. 6) evening.
 
Jalen Gibbs, MEC Player of the Week, led her team with 21 points, going 10-11 from the field with 7 rebounds. Katy Darnell recorded a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds. She went 7-11 from the field, to go along with nine assists. Alyssa DeAngelo had 19 points that included three triples, and four steals on the night. Madeline Huffman recorded 12 points with three steals and four assists. Leslie Huffman went 4-8 to finish the game with 11 points.
 
After a fast start by the Pioneers, DeAngelo nailed a three to tie the score at 5-5 just 1:30 into the contest. Jalen Gibbs notched a layup to give her side the edge 13-9. The Falcons rolled offensively with a nine-point unanswered run in the first quarter, leading 24-11. To open the second quarter, Darnell scored two layups after turnovers by the Pioneers. Thus far in the game, the Falcons had scored 14 points off GSU turnovers. Bre Wilson knocked down two free throws to put FSU up 41-22 with 2:46 to go in the first half of action. Leslie Huffman recorded seven points on two layups and a three in the second quarter.
 
Gibbs hit two layups coming out of halftime to help FSU's lead to 49-34. Madeline Huffman notched a shot from beyond the arc with 4:48 left in the third period. Wilson and Darnell earned a layup each to make the game an 18-point deficit. After a technical foul, the Falcons went up 60-40 over the Pioneers. With 37 seconds left in the third quarter, Gibbs gained a layup. After the break, Glenville State was able to get within 12 of Fairmont State, but DeAngelo answered this with a triple with 7:52 to go in the contest. Gibbs added a layup to make the score 75-55. DeAngelo swished a pair of free throws with 1:02 left. To wrap up the match-up, Gibbs recorded a layup off an unselfish pass from Aaliyah Brunny to take the win 88-70 over the Pioneers.

The women's basketball team will head up to California (PA) for a non-conference match-up next Tuesday (Dec. 12). Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. inside the Convocation Center in California, PA.
