Men’s Basketball Races Past WVWC 104-55

The high-powered Fairmont State offense eclipsed the century mark for the ninth time this season and hit 14 shots from beyond the arc.

FAIRMONT, W.Va. – The Fairmont State men's basketball team (21-6, 16-5 Mountain East Conference) dominated West Virginia Wesleyan (2-24 overall, 2-19 MEC) with a 104-55 win at Joe Retton Arena on Wednesday night (Feb. 22).
 
Isaiah Sanders led his team with 17 points and scored his 2,000th career point at Fairmont State with a fastbreak layup at the 14:52 mark in the first half. The graduate student from Sicklerville, N.J. shot 7-for-11 from the field and 3-for-5 from beyond the arc. Briggs Parris drilled shots from deep and hit four three-pointers and finished with 16 points. Zyon Dobbs and David Jolinder added 15 points apiece. Dobbs distributed five assists, while Jolinder went 4-for-8 from the field, and 2-for-3 from the three-point line.
 
Dobbs, who recently hit the 1,000-point career milestone, knocked down a three to get things started for the Fighting Falcons on the first possession of the contest. Sanders knocked down a shot from downtown and followed the triple with a dunk to put Fairmont State ahead 10-6. George Mangas and Sanders notched a layup to continue the offensive attack. Wesleyan went on a scoring run to even the score at 14. Tariq Woody countered the WVWC run with a layup. Dobbs completed a three-point and the Falcons held a 21-18 lead midway through the first half. Mangas and Parris hit a basket each to bump the Falcons' lead to 27-18. Fonz Hale completed a jumper with 5:32 to play in the period. Parris went on a scoring frenzy with four buckets from downtown in just over four minutes at the end of the half. Dobbs pushed the Fairmont State lead to 49-26 at the break.
 
Sanders, the newest member of the 2,000-point club at Fairmont State, got off to a hot start in the second half and scored 10 points in the first three minutes of the second act. Woody commanded the paint and scored two layups and a free throw with 15:10 to go. Jolinder drained a pair of three-pointers and hit the Fighting Falcons' 10th triple of the night. With 8:40 to play, Jolinder slammed home a dunk to extend the Falcons' lead to 40 points. Shortly after, Hale hit a three and completed a drive to the basket. Adam Deininger picked off a pass which led to a jumper at the hoop, and Przemyslaw Golek nailed a three that extended the Fairmont State lead to 92-42. The Falcons' offensive success continued with a three-point basket by Tommy Williams and another by Tyler Ganley. Tyheil Peterson recorded the last bucket of the night and wrapped a bow on the 104-55 Fairmont State win.
 
The Fighting Falcons will face Frostburg State on Saturday (Feb. 25) in the final regular season contest of the season. The Bobcats and Fighting Falcons will tip off at 4 p.m. Fairmont State men's basketball will recognize its senior class and welcome back basketball alumni on Saturday in Joe Retton Arena.
