FAIRMONT, W. Va. – The Fairmont State (28-18, 18-8 in Mountain East Conference play) softball team swept a doubleheader versus West Liberty (12-34, 8-18 MEC) on Friday (April 21) at Duvall-Rosier Field in Fairmont, W.Va.
"It is great to see the girls come together and compete out here [at Duvall-Rosier Field]," said Fairmont State Head Coach

Game One – Fairmont State 8, West Liberty 0
Caitlyn Kassay struck her first batter out with a runner at second base to end the top of the first inning and hold the Hilltoppers scoreless. After
Katy Darnell led the bottom half of the first inning off with a double,
Hannah Workman singled to the pitcher on a bunt and Darnell crossed the plate for the game's first run. Workman swiped third and
Peyton Wetherholt followed with an infield single.
Myaih Cloud knocked in Workman and Wetherholt to open up a three-run Fairmont State lead after one inning.

With the bases juiced in the fourth inning, Kassay drew a walk to push the Falcons' lead to one run. Darnell lined a two-RBI single to the left center gap that scored
Mackenzie Maddy and
Jaylin McGill and the Falcons led 6-0. Kassay tagged up and scored on a
Kae Compton foul out to increase the lead to 7-0. The Falcons scored the game-winning run in the sixth inning when
Jordan Novak brought home Workman on a pinch-hit RBI single and the Falcons won game one in six innings.

Darnell and Workman both finished with a pair of hits.
Abbie Keilholz and Darnell each had one double. The Falcons swiped five bases and
Judeah Morris and Workman both had two stolen bags.

Kassay went the distance and picked up her seventh win of the season. She held the West Liberty offense to three hits and struck out three batters in the complete game outing.

Game Two – Fairmont State 3, West Liberty 1
The Falcons responded in the bottom of the second inning after WLU posted one run in the opening inning. With one out,
Courtney Moyer doubled to left center and advanced to third on a wild pitch. After
Alexa Andrews walked, she took off for second base and Moyer scored while the Hilltoppers tried to tag Andrews out advancing to second. With Andrews at second base, Keilholz roped a double to left center and scored Andrews to take the lead.
Emma Gates collected an RBI base hit to right center and scored McGill to complete a three-run inning for Fairmont State.

Gates settled in the circle after the first inning and tossed six shutout innings after giving up a run in the first. The freshman improved her record to 12-3 after allowing one run on six hits and one strikeout.

In the batter's box, Keilholz smoked two doubles and drove in an RBI. Wetherholt, Cloud, Moyer and Gates all finished with hits in the second game of the doubleheader.

The Fairmont State softball team will play its final regular season home games on Sunday (April 23) versus Wheeling starting at 1 p.m. The Senior Day recognition will be held in between both games.
