Softball Scores Two Runs in the Seventh to Earn a Split with NDC

Emma Gates tossed her sixth complete game of the year and earned her 11th win.

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – The Fairmont State (21-15, 11-5 in Mountain East Conference play) softball team earned a split at Notre Dame (Ohio) (19-15, 9-6) on Friday (April 7) at Normandy Field in South Euclid, Ohio. Mackenzie Maddy's RBI single in the seventh inning scored Judeah Morris and broke a 1-1 tie in the Fighting Falcons' game two win. Abbie Keilholz's base hit scored Maddy and was the difference in Fairmont State's 3-2 win.
 
Game One – NDC 8, Fairmont State 0 (5 inn.)
NDC scored a run in the first inning on an RBI groundout and held a 1-0 lead after one inning. Peyton Wetherholt drew a leadoff walk in the second but was left on first base after three consecutive outs. The home team added a second run in the bottom half of the inning to take a 2-0 lead.
 
After a scoreless third, Hannah Workman laced a single back up the middle to start the fourth. Emily Riggs followed with an infield single. The Fighting Falcons hit into three flyouts and left two runners on base. NDC increased its lead to seven runs after scoring five runs in the fourth inning. Fairmont State went 1-2-3 in the top of the fifth and NDC scratched across the game-winning run in the bottom of the fifth.
 
Game Two – Fairmont State 3, NDC 2
Judeah Morris threw out an NDC runner attempting to advance to third base in the bottom of the first inning for Fairmont State's second out. Emma Gates forced a groundout and neither team scored after one inning. Courtney Moyer walked with two outs in the second but was left on base. Gates sat NDC down in order and the game remained scoreless after two.
 
Elizabeth Waszkiewicz walked to begin the third inning and Morris placed a bunt down the line for a single. Fairmont State had runners at second and third with two outs but NDC kept FSU off the scoreboard. Gates threw a scoreless third.
 
With two outs in the bottom of the fourth, Notre Dame doubled and scored the first run of the game. Morris tossed the ball to Maddy, who threw out an NDC runner attempting to score and limited NDC to one run.

With the NDC holding a 1-0 lead in the sixth, Moyer started a two-out rally with a double to right center. Fairmont State tied the game on an NDC error with Moyer scoring from second. After six innings, the game was tied at 1-1.
 
Morris began the Fairmont State seventh inning with an infield hit to the shortstop. Workman moved her to second with a sacrifice bunt. Maddy lined a single to left field and Morris wheeled around third and gave Fairmont State its first lead of the game. Keilholz singled to center field and Maddy scored from second and FSU got a big insurance run heading into the bottom of the seventh. NDC doubled in its first at bat of the seventh and scored a run with two outs. Gates stranded the tying run at first and the winning run at the plate with her fifth strikeout of the game to give Fairmont State a 3-2 win.
 
Gates earned her sixth complete game of the season and improved her record to 11-3. She worked around 10 NDC hits and allowed only one earned run in her 17th appearance in the circle.
 
Moyer hit her second double of the season and had two hits while Morris also finished the game with multiple hits. Workman, Maddy and Keilholz chipped in hits for FSU. Workman and Maddy each stole a base in the Fairmont State win.

The Fairmont State softball team will complete its 10-game road trip with a doubleheader at Alderson Broaddus tomorrow (April 8) beginning at 11 a.m.
