Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

DeAngelo and Darnell Lead Fairmont State to 19-point Win

The Fairmont State University women's basketball team welcomed Davis & Elkins College to the Joe Retton Arena. Four different Falcons finished with double-digit points in the 81-62 victory over the Senators.

In the opening period, it seemed that Fairmont State (15-2, 9-1) was on its way to another smooth victory, jumping ahead 5-1. Davis & Elkins (2-11, 1-9) responded with five-straight to lead 6-5 with 7:39 on the clock. For the remainder of the first, the Falcons out paced the Senators, 17-5, and led by 12 (22-10) going to the second period.

The second period was a back-and-forth period with each team answering the other. With 2:11 left in the half, the visitors cut the deficit to five (28-23). However, two field goals by Jalen Gibbs then a Madeline Huffman three gave the home side a 35-23 edge going into the locker room at the break.

Both teams came out firing in the third and rarely missed. It was the highest scoring for both as D&E scored 22 to FSU's 31. Midway through the period, Alyssa DeAngelo hit back-to-back threes to make it a 19-point (48-29) difference. The Falcons eventually extended the lead to 21 (66-45) going to the final 10 minutes of regulation.

Davis & Elkins outscored the home side in the fourth (17-15) but the closest it made the game was 15 (70-55). The home side went on to close it out for the 19-point win.

DeAngelo led the way for the Falcons with 17 points. Katy Darnell finished with a double-double, dropping 16 points with 10 rebounds. Leslie Huffman and Gibbs added 15 and 13 points, respectively. Points off turnovers (25-19) and fast break points (20-5) were a contributing factor for the home side.

Fairmont State hits the road to face Frostburg State on Saturday, January 27. Start time is set for 2:00 p.m.
