Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Gibbs Joins 1,000-point Club as Women's Basketball Drops Road Game

FROSTBURG, Md. - The Fairmont State University women's basketball team traveled to Frostburg State University to take on the Bobcats. An early deficit proved too much as the Falcons fell to hosts, 89-62.

Despite the outcome of the game, Fairmont State's Jalen Gibbs joined the 1,000-point club with her 13 points. Gibbs joins teammates Katy Darnell and Alyssa DeAngelo as active Falcons to score over 1,000 career points.

In the opening frame, the two teams were evenly matched as Jalen Gibbs scored the first five points but Fairmont State (15-3, 9-2) trailed by two (7-5). Frostburg State (10-8, 7-4) widened the margin with an 8-0 run to lead 15-5 with 4:18 on the clock.

Alyssa DeAngelo responded with four-consecutive points to make it a six-point (15-9) game before the Bobcats laid in the final basket of the first. Headed to the second 10 minutes of action, the home side led 17-9.

The second period started with the two teams exchanging points until a 5-0 spot for the Falcons made it a one possession game, 19-17. Frostburg State slowly grew its lead and notched the final four points of the quarter. As both sides went into their respective locker rooms, the hosts were up 37-27.

Both teams exploded offensively in the third but it was the Bobcats who had the better period, expanding the edge to 21 (60-39) at one point. When the horn sounded, Fairmont State trailed 66-49 as the final 10 minutes of regulation were upon them.

The Falcons tried to cut into the deficit in the fourth but the margin was too much as the home side maintained the lead and went on to secure the win.

Katy Darnell led Fairmont with 21 points with seven rebounds. DeAngelo finished the afternoon with 14 points as the team struggled from behind the arc, going 4-20 (20%).

Fairmont State remains on the road as it will face Concord University on Wednesday, January 31 at 5:30 p.m.
