ATHENS, W.Va. - The Fairmont State University women's basketball team traveled to face the Mountain Lions of Concord University. Unable to keep up with the hosts, the Falcons fell on the road, 84-66.
Fairmont State (15-4, 9-3) opened the game as Leslie and
Madeline Huffman combined for the opening four points. Concord (10-8, 7-5) closed the gap and eventually used an 11-2 run to capture a 13-8 edge.
Alyssa DeAngelo made two free throws to close the period but the Falcons trailed by three (13-10) going to the second.
The Mountain Lions continued its strong start with a 7-2 run to lead 20-12. Concord kept its advantage until Fairmont State narrowed it to just two points (27-25) as DeAngelo made two free throws. The hosts completed a three-point play to end the half and lead 30-25.
In the third quarter, the home side slowly started to pull away from the Falcons. At one point, the Mountain Lions led by 15 (52-37) with 1:52 left in the third. FSU cut into the deficit with the final five points of the quarter but still trailed, 54-45, going to the final 10 minutes.
Concord maintained its advantage throughout the period. Midway through the period, the Mountain Lions pulled away enroute to the 18-point margin.
Katy Darnell led the Falcons with 19 points and eight rebounds. DeAngelo finished with 15 points while
Leslie Huffman and
Aaliyah Brunny both contributed 11 points.
Fairmont State returns to the Dan Cava Court at the Joe Retton Arena on Satuday, February 3. Start time is set for 2:00 p.m.
