ATHENS, W.Va. – The Fairmont State University men's basketball team journeyed to Concord University. After capturing the late lead, the Falcons fell to a last second three-point shot, 69-68.
Coming out of the locker room after halftime, Fairmont State (14-5, 7-5) and Concord (12-4, 8-4) were tied at 32. The seesaw affair kept its pace as the home side went up five (41-36) with 17:10 on the clock.
A
David Jolinder three-point play, and two
Cameron Whiteside free throws evened the score. Neither side was able to grasp total control until
Zyon Dobbs nailed a three to give the Falcons a 54-51 lead with 9:40 left in regulation.
The Mountain Lions responded with a 10-3 to go back in front by four (61-57) with just under six minutes to go. FSU had an answer of its own, scoring 10 of the next 12 points with four coming from Jolinder. With 1:35 on the clock, the Falcons led 67-63.
Neither side was able to get anything to fall over the next minute until the home side made a three to make it a one-point (67-66) game. Following a steal, Jolinder was fouled and sent to the line. He made the front end of the trip but missed the second shot.
On the ensuing rebound, Concord drove the far side of the court and hit a three from the left wing with just two seconds remaining in regulation. Following a timeout, Fairmont State put the ball into Dobbs' hands as he hit a late game-winning shot earlier in the season.
Unfortunately, his shot from just a few steps inside mid court did not go as the Falcons fell by the singular point. Jolinder led the team with 26 points, 10 rebounds while going 9-18 (.500) from the field and 8-9 (.889) from the charity stripe.
Fairmont State welcomes Glenville State on Saturday, February 3 to Joe Retton Arena. Start time is set for 4:00 p.m.
