Falcons Defeat Point Park in Dig Pink Match

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University women's volleyball team faced Point Park University for the first time as Mountain East Conference foes. As the Joe Retton Arena was dressed in pink for the Dig Pink Match, the Falcons bested the Pioneers, 3-1.

Baylie Ostvig led a strong hitting attack for Fairmont State with 21 kills as Josie Nobbe and Adella Rodriguez had 15 and 14, respectively. Kelsie Dangerfield assisted on 31 points with 12 digs while Belle DeVall had 23 assists. Defensively, Josie Skinn and Rodriguez had 13 digs each with a net front presence from Gabi Smith and Natalie Zemba with five and four blocks each.

The first set was an even bout with the two sides trading points. Point Park (3-11, 2-3) found its offensive rhythm as it won four-straight points to lead 21-17. Fairmont State did not blink as Ostvig was in a groove with three kills to go with two aces by DeVall to even the set at 23. The next four points were split between the teams until the Pioneers won the final two to take the set, 27-25.

The Falcons came out in the second set and started to take over with an 8-2 run as they opened a 16-8 lead. Point Park attempted the narrow the margin but FSU held its advantage as Nobbe and Ostvig recorded a kill in the final four points to win the set, 25-17.

In the third set, it was all Fairmont State from the start as it won the opening eight points as Dangerfield notched two aces with three kills by three different Falcons. The home side opened the lead to 10 (11-1) and cruised to the end of the set. Once again, Ostvig put a punctuation on the set with back-to-back kills for the 25-13 win.

At the onset of the fourth set, the Pioneers seemed settle back into the match as they matched the Falcons for the first 13 points. Leading 7-6, Fairmont State's offense found an extra gear as it rattled off 10 of the next 11 points as Rodriguez accounted for three of the points. Point Park tried to narrow the margin but the deficit was too large as Taylor Paul came in and closed the match with an ace.

Fairmont State (13-6, 3-1) kicks off a four-match road trip on Tuesday, October 15 at Frostburg State University. Start time is slated for 7:00 p.m.
