FROSTBURG, Md. -- The Fairmont State University women's volleyball team kicked off its four-match road trip at Frostburg State University. The Falcons rallied from a 2-1 deficit to beat the Bobcats in five.
Baylie Ostvig led the offense with 21 kills while
Joey Borelle returned to the Falcons recording a double-double with 16 kills and 18 digs.
Kelsie Dangerfield recorded 31 assists with 18 more from
Belle DeVall. At the net,
Gabi Smith blocked nine shots as
Josie Skinn tallied 28 digs.
In the opening set, Fairmont State (14-6, 4-1) held the early lead, 10-4. Frostburg State (6-11, 1-5) chipped away at the deficit and after a winning four-straight points, tied the set at 18. A Bobcat error followed by a block by
Chloe McDaniel and
Natalie Zemba gave the lead back to the Falcons before the home team rattled off four more points. Back-to-back kills by McDaniel evened the set at 22 but Frostburg State won three of the final four points to take the set, 25-23.
The second set saw the hosts grasp the early lead before Fairmont State went on an 8-1 run with two kills from Borelle as the Falcons led 14-10. The Bobcats were only a couple of points behind the Falcons before an error and a block by Smith and
Josie Nobbe put the team just two points from the set win, 23-18. Frostburg State claimed the next two points but kills from Borelle and Ostvig secured the 25-21 win and evened the match at one.
Both teams matched the other for the majority of the third but it was the Bobcats who held the slim advantage, 17-14. The two sides kept going back-and-forth until consecutive kills by Smith and Nobbe pulled the Falcons within one (23-22). Unfortunately, Frostburg State won the final two points for the 25-22 set win.
Down two sets to one, Fairmont State's hitting found a groove in the fourth. Trailing 9-7, the Falcons went on a 13-2 run with as six different Falcons recorded a kill during the run. Frostburg State did not go away quietly as it used a 6-1 stretch to make it a three-point (23-20) difference. McDaniel and Zemba combined for another block before McDaniel drove home a set by DeVall to win the set (25-21) and force a fifth set.
The Bobcats won the opening point of the fifth but the Falcons claimed the next eight points with three kills off the hand of Ostvig. Frostburg State tried to narrow the margin but were unable to do so as Borelle put the final stamp on the set (15-10) and the match (3-2).
Fairmont State ventures to Institute, West Virginia to battle the Yellow Jackets of West Virginia State University on Friday, October 18. Match time is set for 7:00 p.m.
