Women's Soccer Shuts Out Glenville State

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University women's soccer team battled Glenville State University in a Sunday matinee. The Falcons shut out the Pioneers, 1-0.

From the opening kick, Fairmont State (6-4-1, 5-3-0) applied the early pressure with the opening three shots but neither one found the back of the goal. Glenville State (4-5-2, 2-5-1) answered with a shot of its own but Olivia Johnston made the stop.

The Falcons kept their strong offensive presence with a couple more shots but they were off target. In the 39th minute, the ball bounced into the box as the Pioneers tried to clear it. The ball fortunately rolled right to Filippa Stalhammar as she found some opened space and scored on the left foot kick to give the home side the 1-0 lead.

In the second half, Glenville State began to find its offensive stride as it fired two shots on goal but Johnston saved both of them. When Fairmont State possessed the ball, it kept kept away from the Pioneers as the clock continued towards the 90-minute mark. The visitors had one last chance in the 89th but once again, Johnston made the save to preserve the one-goal victory.

Johnston finished the afternoon with five saves as the Falcons outshot the opponents, 14-10. FSU also held the advantage in corner kicks, 4-3.

Fairmont State travels south for a Mountain East Conference showdown with the University of Charleston on Wednesday, October 16. Start time is set for 7:00 p.m.
