Charleston gained the early advantage in the first set but Fairmont State either tied the score or stayed just a couple of points behind. As the set was tied at 15, the Golden Eagles opened a three-point advantage (19-16) but a kill from
Cayden Anschutz followed by an error made it a 19-18 score. However, the home side was able to hold on to the lead and won the set, 25-21.
In the second set, the Golden Eagles held the lead for the first part as they led 14-10. The Falcons found a groove and after an 8-2 run that featured two aces, the visitors were in front, 18-16. Charleston responded quickly with a 5-1 run of its own to recapture the lead, 22-19. A block by Smith and Nobbe then a kill by Smith separated the two squads by just one point, 22-21. Both sides exchanged the next points but it was the hosts who won the final two points to take the set, 25-22.
The third set opened with Charleston taking an early 7-1 edge but Fairmont State quickly answered with a 9-1 run to take a 10-8 lead. The Falcons carried the momentum as they opened a seven-point advantage (19-12) after kills by Borelle and Nobbe. The Golden Eagles attempted to chip away at the differential but the gap was too large as Nobbe ended the set with a kill for the 25-18 win.
After being forced to a fourth set, the hosts won the opening nine points. The Falcons battled back and cut the difference to three points at two points in the set, 12-9 and 15-12. Unfortunately, that was the closest the Maroon and White got to evening the set and fell 25-19 and 3-1 in the match.
Fairmont State (14-8, 4-3) wraps up its four-consecutive road games on Tuesday, October 22 at Shepherd University. Match time is set for 6:00 p.m.
