Fairmont State Travels to Shepherd

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University women's volleyball team hit the road to face Shepherd University in a non-conference battle. The Falcons fell to the Rams, 3-1.

Joey Borelle and Kelsie Dangerfield led Fairmont State as they both recorded a double-double. Borelle totaled 15 kills and 11 digs while Dangerfield had 18 assists and 12 digs. Baylie Ostvig added 12 kills as Josie Skinn corralled 12 digs.

In the first set, the two teams never grasped a lead as one always answered the other. Trailing 9-8, the Falcons won 12 of the next 15 points and opened a 20-12 lead as a kill by Natalie Zemba capped off the stretch. Shepherd started to rally and cut the margin to four (22-18) but Fairmont State won the final three points including a kill from Ostvig to win the set, 25-18.

The Rams held the early lead in the second set before a 5-1 for the Falcons to take a 10-9 edge. Shepherd responded with a 7-1 run of its own but Fairmont State quickly answered and pulled within one (17-16). The hosts maintained a slim lead until they won five of the last six and claimed the set, 25-20.

Fairmont State jumped out the early advantage in the fourth, 8-4, but Shepherd's offense went to work as it eventually led 15-12. The Falcons got themselves within one point on several occasions but were unable to even the set. The Rams kept the lead and won the set, 25-21, and led the match, 2-1.

For the fourth set, it was mainly controlled by Shepherd as it went on to win the final set by the score of 25-14.

Fairmont State (14-9) returns to Joe Retton Arena on Friday, October 25 to face Davis & Elkins College. Match time is set for 7:00 p.m.
