FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University women's volleyball team faced Davis & Elkins College for a Mountain East Conference battle. The Falcons cruised to a sweep of the Senators with set scores of 25-13, 25-14, and 25-16.
Fairmont State was led by
Baylie Ostvig with 10 kills as
Joey Borelle finished with nine.
Kelsie Dangerfield totaled 19 assists with
Belle DeVall adding another 11. Defensively, the Falcons had a strong night at the net with
Natalie Zemba blocking seven shots as
Gabi Smith added another six.
Josie Skinn corralled 19 digs on the night.
The Falcons wasted little time in opening set, winning nine of the first 10 points. FSU expanded its lead to 12 (18-6) following a kill from Borelle. Davis & Elkins cut the deficit in half with a six-straight points but the margin was too large. Fairmont State closed the set on a 7-1 run for the 25-13 win.
In the second set, two sides were evenly matched until the Falcons won four-straight points to lead 9-4. The Senators did not fade away as they cut the difference to one (11-10) with a 6-2 run. However, Fairmont State grasped control of the set by taking 14 of the final 18 points.
Ashlyn Six ended the set with a kill from
Cayden Anschutz for the 25-14 set.
Fairmont State started the third set just like the first by jumping out to a 10-2 lead before the Falcons slowly opened a 10-point edge (17-7). Davis & Elkins showed some life with five-straight points to make it a 21-16 score. Following a bad set by the Senators,
Adella Rodriguez secured the final three points for the 25-16 set score and winning the match in straight sets.
Fairmont State (15-9, 5-3) hosts West Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday, October 25 as it is Senior Day. Start time is set for 1:00 p.m.
