Women's Volleyball Holds off West Virginia Wesleyan on Senior Day

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University women's volleyball team welcomed West Virginia Wesleyan College to the Joe Retton Arena. The Falcons were able to hold off the Bobcats in five sets, 3-2.

Prior to the match, the Falcons honored its senior players: Jay Miller, Baylie Ostvig, Taylor Paul and Lindsey Ulring.

In the first set, West Virginia Wesleyan came out early and led 9-3. Fairmont State found its way back into the set with a 7-2 run to pull within one (11-10). The Bobcats expanded their lead to five (15-10) and maintained it late in the set. Trailing 20-15, the Falcons used a 5-1 run to make it a 21-20 score. The two teams then won two points apiece but it was the visitors who closed out the set and won, 25-22.

Fairmont State returned the favor in the second set and quickly jumped out to a 9-3 lead. The Falcons did not back down and cruised to a 25-10 set win. 

The third set was a back-and-forth affair as they stayed within striking distance. West Virginia Wesleyan used a 7-1 run jump ahead 21-17 but Fairmont State responded with a run of its own to lead 24-22. Facing set point, the Bobcats won the next three points lead 25-24 but a kill by Baylie Ostvig evened the score at 25. Unfortunately, the guests won the final two points to win the set, 27-25, and lead the match, 2-1.

Just like the second, the fourth set was all Falcons as they won 16 of the first 18 points. Leading 19-7, Fairmont State's Joey Borelle converted on an pass from Belle DeVall for her 1,000th kil in her collegiate career. The home side won the set, 25-8 and forced a fifth set.

In the fifth set, Fairmont State carried the momentum and were in front, 8-2. West Virginia Wesleyan won the next two points but the Falcons did not flinch as they closed the set on a 7-1 run to win the set, 15-5, along with the match, 3-2.

Borelle led the team with 16 kills as Ostvig and Josie Nobbe finished with 13 and 11, respectively. Kelsie Dangerfield totaled 28 assists on the afternoon with another 17 off the hands of DeVall. On defense, Josie Skinn had 20 digs while Gabi Smith blocked seven attacks.

Fairmont State (16-9, 6-3) faces Wheeling University on Tuesday, October 29 for a big match inside Joe Retton Arena at 7:00 p.m. Fans make sure to wear your maroon as it is a "Maroon Out" match for the Falcons.
