FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University women's volleybal team hosted Wheeling University. The Falcons fell to the Cardinals, 3-0.
Early in the first set, Wheeling held the lead, 4-1. Fairmont State narrowed the margin to two (6-4) before the Cardinals went on a 9-1 run to lead 15-5. The guests eventually grew that lead to 12 (20-8) as they went on to win the set, 25-13.
In the second, the Falcons jumped out in front with a 7-5 advantage. Wheeling quickly responded with a 6-1 run to go ahead, 11-8. The two sides went back-and-forth before the Cardinals rattled off five-straight points for a 19-12 edge. Fairmont State tried to cut into the deficit but ran out of points as Wheeling won the set, 25-16.
The Falcons grasped the early lead (4-1) before Wheeling won the next five points to go in front, 6-4. The Cardinals maintained the lead until FSU won the next four to tie the set at 13 off a block by
Josie Nobbe and
Natalie Zemba. The visitors once again regained the lead, this time with a 7-1 run to lead 20-14. Fairmont State cut the difference to four on multiple occasions but the difference was too large as the Cardinals won the set, 25-18.
Joey Borelle finished the night with nine kills and 14 digs as Nobbe totaled seven kills and four blocks. Defensively,
Josie Skinn tallied 16 digs while
Kelsie Dangerfield amounted 11 assists.
Fairmont State (16-10, 6-4) travels to Athens, West Virginia to face Concord University on Friday, November 1. Match time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
