Falcons Bested in Four Sets by Mountain Lions

ATHENS, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University women's volleyball team made the journey south to face Concord University. The Falcons fell to the Mountain Lions in four sets by the scores of 25-21, 25-20, 21-25 and 25-20.

Baylie Ostvig led Fairmont State with 20 kills while Joey Borelle posted a double-double with 19 kills and 10 digs. Kelsie Dangerfield also had a double-double with 25 assists and 12 digs as Josie Skinn paced the defense with 20 digs.

The opening set was a seesaw affair but Concord was able to claim a slight edge. Fairmont State was able to tie the set and eventually took a 14-13 lead after an Ostvig kill. The Mountain Lions responded with four-straight points to regain the lead. The Falcons tried to even the set but was unable to do so as the hosts won the set, 25-21.

Just like the first set, the second started with each side matching the other. Midway through the set, Concord once again used a 4-0 run to go ahead 18-14. Fairmont State was unable to narrow the margin and fell in the set, 25-20.

Down two sets, the Falcons opened the third set with a 6-2 lead following a block by Gabi Smith and Chloe McDaniel. Fairmont State was able to maintain the lead throughout the set and forced a fourth with a 25-21 win.

In the fourth, it was Concord that jumped out to an early lead, 5-1. The Falcons were able to narrow the difference to two points on several occasions before the Mountain Lions were able to stretch the lead to six (15-9). Trailing 22-14, FSU won three-straight points but Concord was able to regain control and won the final set, 25-20.

Fairmont State returns to Joe Retton Arena on Monday, November 4 for a non-conference match against Salem University. Start time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
