LOCK HAVEN, Pa. -- The Fairmont State University women's basketball team wrapped its stay in Pennsylvania against Lock Haven University. The Falcons outscored the Bald Eagles by 11 in the fourth quarter for a 78-70 victory.
Jalen Gibbs and
Leslie Huffman led all scorers with 19 points as
Alyssa DeAngelo added 11 points.
Aaliyah Brunny,
Leila Jones and
Gabby Reep combined for 25 points from the bench in the victory.Â
From the early onset, Lock Haven controlled the game, scoring the first seven points. Fairmont State was able to narrow the margin to four at several moments of the period but the hosts were able to maintain the advantage and led 22-14 going to the second.
In the second,
Jalen Gibbs and
Leslie Huffman took over the Falcons on the offensive end and slowly narrowed the gap. The two combined for 16 of the teams 18 points in the frame as Gibbs notched 11 of the points. After a layup from
Gabby Reep, FSU only trailed by three (35-32) as the game went to halftime.
The two teams found their offensive prowess as they matched each other to start the third. Midway through the period, Lock Haven went on a 7-0 run to open a 12-point (48-36). Just under four minutes left in the third, Fairmont State scored 12-straight points with eight of them coming off the hand of
Leila Jones. With the game tied at 50, the Bald Eagles were able capture a small lead and thanks to a buzzer beating layup, led 56-53 going to the final 10 minutes of regulation.
Lock Haven notched the first points of the fourth but the Falcons found their footing and rattled off a 12-0 run, capped off by an
Aaliyah Brunny fastbreak layup to put the team ahead 65-58. The Bald Eagles were able to cut the deficit to just three points but that was the closest they got to tying the game. In the final minute,
Leslie Huffman was 4-4 from the charity stripe as FSU claimed its first win of the season, 78-70.
From the field, the Falcons were 55.6% (30-54) on the night while also hitting seven of their 14 attempts from three-point range. The team was also able to capitalize off turnovers, scoring 22 points compared to eight for Lock Haven.
Jalen Gibbs was named to the All-Tournament team for her performances over the weekend.
Fairmont State (1-1) remains on the road on Thursday, November 14 as it faces Ursuline College. Game time in Ohio is slated for 6:00 p.m.
