BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – The Fairmont State University men's basketball team ventured to West Virginia Wesleyan College for the first game of the Mountain East Conference. The Falcons were able to cruise to a 104-66 win over the Bobcats.
David Jolinder led all scorers with 23 points, going 9-16 from the field. Rudy Fitzgibbons (16), Taj Thweatt (14), Tyheil Peterson (13) and Andre Harris (11) each finished with double-digit points. As a team, FSU forced 21.
Early on in the first half, the two sides went back-and-forth until Fairmont State went on a 7-0 run capped by a Tommy Williams three to lead 13-7. FSU held the couple basket lead before another seven-point stretch to open a 30-17 advantage with 10:12 left in the first.
The Falcons stayed in front by double digits for the remainder of the half. A late 5-0 run by Fitzgibbons and Peterson gave Fairmont State a 50-34 lead going into the locker room.
Both sides exchanged baskets for the first six minutes of the second half as the Falcons then scored 10-consecutive points. Jolinder accounted for five of them as the maroon and white led 70-46 with 13:13 remaining.
West Virginia Wesleyan was unable to make up any substantial ground as Fairmont State kept increasing its lead. By the time the final horn sounded, FSU claimed the 38-point victory.
Fairmont State (4-0, 1-0) returns to the Joe Retton Arena on Tuesday, November 26 to face Davis & Elkins College. Start time is set for 7:30 p.m.
