FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University women's soccer team faced Point Park University in the penultimate match of the regular season. The Falcons topped the Pioneers, 3-1.
At the start of the first half, the two sides balanced each other out as they both had a shot on goal but both goalkeepers made the save. In the 28th minute,
Braylyn Sparks passed the ball ahead to an open space as
Serenity Thomas chased down the ball and was able to score off her right foot to give Fairmont State the 1-0 lead.
Just a few minutes later,
Valentina Gianinetto was fouled in the box and drew a penalty kick. Gianinetto took the kick and shot it just passed the outstretched arm of the goalie for the second goal of the half. At the half, the Falcons led 2-0.
Quickly into the second half, Point Park swiftly moved down the field and scored just 33 seconds in to make it a one-goal game. However, the Falcons responded just seven minutes later as Thomas crossed the ball across the back line of defenders right to Gianinetto. The freshman midfielder buried the pass to reclaim a two-goal advantage, 3-1.
Over the final 33 minutes, Fairmont State held Point Park to only three shots as
Olivia Johnston only had to make two saves. As the final horn sounded, the Falcons extended their winning streak to five games.
