FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University women's basketball team welcomed Glenville State University to Joe Retton Arena. Despite trailing after the first quarter, the Falcons outscored the Pioneers by 18 over the final three periods en route to a 79-66 win.
Leslie Huffman led all scorers with 22 points while also grabbing 11 rebounds. Joining her with a double-double was
Jalen Gibbs with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
Alyssa DeAngelo added in 16 points as the Falcons scored 22 points off of Glenville State turnovers.
In the first period, the two sides went back-and-forth with a couple of baskets along with turnovers as the game was tied at four with 7:10 on the clock. Fairmont State (8-2, 4-1) went on a 7-2 run to go in front by five (11-6) with 4:56 left. The Falcons maintained the lead until Glenville State (7-3, 2-2) used a 9-1 stretch to take the lead by five (22-17) with just over a minute left in the first.
Gabby Reep hit two free throws but a tip-in by the Pioneers gave them a 24-19 lead going to the second period.
Quickly in the second, Fairmont State tied the game after a three by
Aaliyah Brunny followed by a layup by
Alyssa DeAngelo. The Pioneers quickly regained the lead with back-to-back layups before the Falcons went on a run. FSU scored 14 of the next 16 points to go ahead by eight (38-30) with 1:43 left in the half.
Leslie Huffman accounted for 10 of the 14 points for Fairmont State during the run. Glenville State scored the final three points but Fairmont State held a 38-35 edge going into the half.
Coming out of the locker room, the Pioneers took the lead back within the opening minute with a lay in and a three-point shot. The Falcons did not blink and responded with eight-straight points to hold a 46-40 advantage with 6:56 left in the period. Four different members of the FSU team contributed during the stretch. Glenville State tried to even the game going to the fourth but were unable to do so as Fairmont State led 56-51.
The difference ping-ponged between two and four points for a majority of the fourth period as the Falcons remained in front of the Pioneers. Over the final two minutes of regulation, FSU went 11-12 from the free throw line as GSU was only able to score two points in that time frame. As the final horn sounded, the Falcons were victorious by the 13-point margin.
Fairmont State ventures south for the final conference game of the first half the season against Concord University on Sunday, December 15. Start time is slated for 2:00 p.m.
