FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University women's basketball team took on the Golden Eagles of the University of Charleston. Four different Falcons finished with double-digit points in a 72-59 home win.
Jalen Gibbs and
Leslie Huffman led Fairmont State (7-2, 3-1) with 15 points each as
Leslie Huffman grabbed seven rounds.
Alyssa DeAngelo finished the day with 11 while
Leila Jones added 10 points off the bench.Â
The Falcons got things started in the first period as
Jalen Gibbs completed a three-point play within the first minute. Charleston (2-7, 0-4) responded by scoring the next four points to take a slim lead before Fairmont State used a 14-2 run to go in front by 10 (17-7) with 3:47 on the clock. During the stretch, five different Falcons found the bottom of the net. The Golden Eagles trimmed to lead to six but FSU was able to expand the lead back to 10 (24-14) at the end of the period.
In the second period, Charleston scored seven-straight points before Fairmont State countered with seven of the next 10 points to go ahead 31-24 with 4:46 left in the half. The Golden Eagles cut the deficit to four until the Falcons went on a 7-1 run capped off by a
Leslie Huffman three to hold a 10-point advantage. UC made a late free throw that set the score at 38-29 going into the halftime locker room.
Starting the third period, Fairmont State was able to extend its lead to 12 (45-33) just under three minutes into the half. Charleston cut into the lead over the next four minutes and trailed 49-42 but the Falcons returned the favor. Over the final two minutes, FSU score the final six points and led 55-42 going into the fourth.Â
In the final period of regulation, the Falcons maintained the double-digit lead throughout and were able to claim the 13-point victory. The team was able to force 19 turnovers on the day and scored 15 points off them.Â
Fairmont State welcomes Glenville State University to campus on Wednesday, December 11. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
