ROME, Ga. - The Fairmont State University baseball wrapped up its season opening series against Shorter University. Despite trailing early, the Falcons fought back and evened the game at five. Unfortunately, the Hawks got the upper hand and won, 6-5.
Neither team was able to get anything going until the bottom of the second when Shorter got on the board with an RBI double. The Hawks added three more runs in the second for a 4-0 lead.
Over the next two innings, both offenses struggled to get produce any runs until the top of the fifth when
Ryan Goff drove in two runs with a single to left field. Shorter added one more run in the bottom half of the inning to go ahead by three (5-2).
In the top of the sixth, the Falcons were able to put runners on the corners with one out.
Vince Sabatino stepped up and evened the game with just one swing of the bat.
The game remained tied at five until the bottom of the seventh. The home side reclaimed the lead with an RBI double.
With the 6-5 lead, the Hawks held Fairmont State to just one base runner over the final two innings.
Sabatino was 2-4 from the plate with three RBI while scoring twice. Goff drove in the other two runs as
Cameron Sheets was 1-3 with two walks.
Fairmont State (0-3) returns back to Georgia on Friday, February 23 to face Augusta University. Game one is set to start at 2:00 p.m.
