AUGUSTA, Ga. - The Fairmont State University baseball team ventured back south the state of Georgia to face Augusta University. The Falcons fell in both games to the Jaguars, 17-6 and 3-1.
Game 1: Augusta 17, Fairmont State 6
Augusta jumped out to an early 5-0 behind a bases clearing triple to right field. In the top of the second, Fairmont State got on the board as
Tyler Haskins drew a walk with the bases loaded.
The Falcons added to its total in the third on a
Cameron Sheets double to center field to bring home
Quintin Smith. Despite the offensive push, the Jaguars added four more runs on three hits in the bottom half of the inning to lead, 9-2.
Although Haskins drove in another run in the fourth, the home side plated three more. Both teams scored another run in the fifth before Augusta put the final stamp on the game. In the bottom of the eighth, the hosts hit a three-run home run for the final score of 17-6.
Game 2: Augusta 3, Fairmont State 1
The second game was the complete opposite of the first as it became a pitching dual. Both sides had curated two hits until the bottom of the third when the Jaguars scored a run on an error.
Augusta added to its lead an inning later with a sacrifice fly. In the top of the fifth,
Cade Sikoski brought home the first run of the game for Fairmont State with a single to left as
Vince Sabatino scored. As the inning proceeded, the Falcons were able to put runners in scoring position with one out. Unfortunately, they left the runners stranded to end the inning.
The Jaguars increased their back to two runs (3-1) on a wild pitch. The scoring ended there as the visitors went down in order in the sixth and seventh innings.
Fairmont State (0-5) remains in Augusta to play two more games against the Jaguars on Saturday, February 24. Game one is set to start at 11:00 a.m.
