GLENVILLE, W.Va. - The Fairmont State University softball team wrapped up its play in the Sue Morris Complex Classic hosted by Glenville State University. The Falcons faced Slippery Rock University and were able to squeeze by for the win, 5-4.
Both teams got a runner on base in the opening frame but were unable to drive one in. In the top of the second,
Kamilla Slayton singled through the right side and after moving up a base, she stole third with two outs.
Alyssa McCormick singled to right field to give Fairmont State the early 1-0 lead.
Slippery Rock tied the game in the bottom half of the inning with a solo home run to right center by Julia Montie. The tied game was short lived as
Courtney Moyer doubled to right field as
Peyton Wetherholt and
Emily Riggs scored. Moyer was driven in as Slayton singled up the middle as the Falcons led 4-1.
In the bottom of the third, SRU added another run with a two-out double to right center. A 1-2-3 inning by FSU, Slippery Rock looked to continue to chip away at the deficit. Montie led the inning off with her second homer of the game to make a 4-3 game. With two outs, SRU loaded the bases with a single and two walks. However,
Jordan Popowski shut the door on the chance with a line out to Riggs.
Fairmont State answered in the top of the fifth as Moyer drove the ball to left field as Riggs crossed the plate. SRU thought it had an answer in the bottom half as it loaded the bases with two outs. Coach
Brooke Sullivan called on McCormick to toe the rubber and after two pitches, she forced a pop up to end the inning.
The Falcons were unable to add to their advantage in the sixth while Slippery Rock was not out of the game just yet. The home team in the neutral site battle cut the difference to just one (5-4) as a runner scored on a fielder's choice with runners at second and third.
In the seventh, Fairmont State had runners on first and second but that was as far as they advanced with a ground ball to end the at-bat. SRU's Montie, who was 3-3 with two homers coming into the leadoff spot, looked to even the score. McCormick was able to get Montie to strikeout look. From there, McCormick got a ground ball right back to her before
Sydney Emanuel made a diving catch in right to close out the game.
Moyer finished the day going 2-3 from the plate with three RBI and scoring once. Slayton also collected two hits while scoring and driving in one run.
Allyson Nordling picked up the win, going 3.2 innings, allowing three runs on five hits with three strikeouts. McCormick earned a save as she pitched 2.1 innings.
Fairmont State (7-1) will host Millersville for a doubleheader on Thursday, March 7 at Duvall-Rosier Field. Game one is set to begin at 2:00 p.m.
