Fairmont State Splits Twinbill with Millersville

FAIRMONT, W.Va. - The Fairmont State University softball team welcomed Millersville University before heading south for the next five days. The Falcons walked it off in game one, 8-7, before falling in extras in game two, 9-7.

Game 1: Fairmont State 8, Millersville 7

Fairmont State struck first in the opening frame when Peyton Wetherholt doubled to left field as Hannah Workman scored from second. Both teams left runners on base over the next two innings until Millersville evened the game with a solo home run that just stayed inside the foul pole.

With the game tied at one, the Falcons looked to regain control. After a leadoff single by Kamilla Slayton, Elizabeth Waszkiewicz tripled to right center to take a 2-1 lead. Isabella Yelle followed with a sacrifice fly to center to increase the advantage one more.

In the fifth, the Marauders answered with an RBI single to pull back within one (3-2). FSU added two runs in its half of the inning with Wetherholt driving in Workman once more.

The visitors narrowed the game back to one (5-4) as it used a double and triple. In the bottom of the sixth, Bella Hess doubled down the right field line to plate Alexa Andrews. Hess later scored on a wild pitch to make a 7-4 lead going to the seventh.

Millersville looked to even the game and got it started with an RBI double to right. After a hit by pitch, an infield single with the bases loaded cut the difference to one (7-6). On the next at-bat, a fielder's choice  score the tying run.

Despite letting the visitors tie the game, the Falcons were set on a walk-off win. Slayton started the inning with a single up the middle. Waszkiewicz followed with a single of her own to put runners at first and second. Yelle ended the game with single up the middle to bring home Slayton for the 8-7 win.

Game 2: Millersville 9, Fairmont State 7 (8 Inn.)

Just like game one, Fairmont State opened the scoring in the second inning as Grace Sobeck doubled down the left field line to bring home Andrews and Kae Compton. Later in the inning, Hess laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Sobeck as the hosts led 3-0.

In the third, the Falcons followed up with another run as Compton drove a ball through the left side as Courtney Moyer scored from third. Unfortunately, the four-run lead was short-lived as Millersville tied the game with one swing of the bat.

Fairmont State recaptured the lead in the bottom of the fourth lined one to left field as both Mattea Buchta and Hess crossed home plate. Once again, the Marauders had the answer with one swing, this time a single to right center that scored two.

Neither side had a chance in the sixth but in the seventh, Millersville had runners on first and second but a ground ball to third ended the frame. The Falcons saw their opportunity with runners on the corners but were unsuccessful as the game venture to extra innings.

The Marauders had the first chance and capitalized as a run scored on a wild pitch with the bases loaded. Following a strikeout, the guests doubled to left to score two more and make a 9-6 game.

In the bottom half, Waszkiewicz pinched hit and doubled off the right center fence to bring home Sobeck.. The Falcons had additional opportunites but were unable to capitalize as they fell by two in extras.

Fairmont State (8-2) now hits the road on Sunday, March 10 to face Tusculum University. Game one is set to start at 11:00 a.m.
