FAIRMONT, W.Va. - The Fairmont State University baseball team hosted Bloomsburg University in the home opener. As the game was played at Doddridge County High School, the Falcons fell to the Huskies, 17-4.
Bloomsburg wasted little time grasping control of the game as a double and a single proceeded a three-run homer over the left field wall. The Huskies added to their lead in the top of the second when a run scored on a throw to second. Later in the inning, the visitors doubled to left to hand the team a 5-0 lead.
In the top of the third, the Huskies added two more runs on a homer to right center. BU continued its scoring in the top of the fourth as it drove in four runs on four hits. The bottom half of the inning, Fairmont State and
Quintin Smith tallied the first hit with a single to right field.
After a fielder's choice,
Noah Canterbury singled up the middle to bring home
Connor Bailey. The Huskies homered in the top of the fifth as
Vince Sabatino answered with a lead-off home run to straight-away center. The visitors added three runs in sixth and a run in the seventh and eighth innings.
Cameron Sheets drove a ball out of the park in the bottom of the eighth as Smith was on base. However, the scoring ended there as Bloomsburg took the first matchup in the three-game series.
Fairmont State will face the Huskies on Saturday, March 2 at Doddridge County High School for a twinbill. Game one is set to start at 3:00 p.m.
