FAIRMONT, W.Va. - The Fairmont State University baseball team opened Mountain East Conference play against Glenville State at Mylan Park in Morgantown. The Falcons fell in both games to the Pioneers, 8-3 and 6-3.
Game One: Glenville State 8, Fairmont State 3
In the first inning, Glenville State worked the bases loaded with two outs. The Pioneers scored the first two runs on a double down the left field line. Fairmont State looked to answer as
Noah Canterbury singled to left center to plate
Quintin Smith. During the next at-bat,
Cameron Sheets scored on a wild pitch to even the game at two.
Glenville State reclaimed the lead in the second as ground out drove in a run. The lead was short-lived as
Ryan Goff doubled to right center as
Zach Brennan scored to square the game at three.
Neither team truly got anything going until the top of the sixth when the Pioneers scored runs on back-to-back hits to jump ahead, 5-3. After the Falcons went down in order, GSU went back to work as it scored three runs on three hits and two walks.Â
Down five runs and to its final three outs, Fairmont State was able to get a runner on first and second but that was the extent of the opportunity as it fell by the five-run difference.
Game Two: Glenville State 6, Fairmont State 3
The Falcons quickly got on the board first as Sheets singled to drive in Smith and Goff. FSU held the advantage until the top of the third when Glenville State scored two runs to tie the game.
The hosts recaptured the lead as
Hudson Smith scored on a wild pitch to put them up 3-2.
Fairmont State remained in front until the sixth when the Pioneers scored a run on a passed ball. The visitors followed with two runs on a single and the final run scored on a walk with the bases loaded.Â
FSU's best chance game in the sixth inning with a runner on second with one out but a double play quickly ended the threat. The Pioneers held on for the game two victory.
