FAIRMONT, W.Va. - The Fairmont State University baseball team faced Concord University for its second-straight home doubleheader. The Falcons fell in extras in game one, 7-6, before taking game two, 4-1.
Game One: Concord 7, Fairmont State 6 (8 Inn.)
Fairmont State got the start it wanted in the bottom of the first inning when
Cameron Sheets stepped to the plate with the bases loaded. The senior first basemen hit one down the left field line and cleared to the bases with a double to give the team a 3-0 lead.
Concord got on the board in the second with an RBI ground out. Despite the strong winds,
Quintin Smith hit a ball over the right field wall to regain a three-run lead (4-1) in the third.Â
The score remained at 4-1 until the top of the fifth when the Mountain Lions pieced together two singles and a walk to loaded the bases. A second walk given up brought in a run and left the bases loaded.
Mac Schnur was called upon to end the threat and he delivered a strike out to keep the lead at two (4-2),
The Falcons added to its lead in the sixth when
Hudson Smith singled through the left side to bring home
Vince Sabatino. In the seventh, FSU was trying to close out the game but mistakes plagued the team. Giving up three errors combined with two hits allowed Concord to score three runs and tie the game.
Fairmont State looked to walk it off in the bottom half of the inning and was posed to do so. A single, two walks and a sacrifice bunt, the Falcons had the bases loaded with one out. Unfortunately, the runners were stranded as the game ventured to extra innings.
In the top of the eighth, the Mountain Lions scored two runs on two hits to lead for the first time in the game. The Falcons led the inning off with a Smith walk followed by a
Connor Bailey single. Following a double steal,
Cameron Moore hit a sacrifice fly to right to advance each runner and make it a 7-6 game with a runner 90 feet away. However, just like the seventh, the runner was left in scoring position as Concord claimed the first game.
Game Two: Fairmont State 4, Concord 1
Just like game one, FSU jumped out front first with an RBI ground out from Bailey to put the team up 1-0 after two. Concord responded in the third with an RBI single to square the game at one.
The Falcons regained the advantage in the bottom half as Moore scored when
Noah Canterbury reached on a fielder's choice. A wild pitch during the next at-bat allowed Smith to score for third.Â
Canterbury eventually found himself on third after another wild pitch and then scored when Sheets grounded out to second base. With a 4-1 lead, the hosts turned to starter
Logan McClure to secure the win.
McClure delivered the performance on the mound Fairmont State needed. Over the final four innings, the senior hurler allowed just three hits and four different base runners but that was it. McClure completed the game for the 4-1 win. On the day, he went seven innings, allowing just one run (earned) on seven hits with six strikeouts.
Fairmont State will face Gannon University on Wednesday, March 20. Start time is slated for 12:00 p.m.
