Fairmont State and Gannon Combine for 28 runs in Non-Conference Loss

FAIRMONT, W.Va. - The Fairmont State University baseball team hosted the Golden Knights of Gannon University ay Mylan Park in Morgantown. Despite leading for a majority of the game, the Falcons loss to the visitors in a high-scoring affair, 18-10.

In the first inning, it was Gannon to jump out ahead as a run scored on an error. Later in the inning, the visitors added a run on a sacrifice fly to hold a 2-0 advantage. Fairmont State got on the board in the bottom of the second as Quintin Smith singled to drive in Hudson Smith.

The Falcons quickly jumped out in front in the third as Vince Sabatino tripled with the bases loaded for the 4-2 lead. Sabatino then scored on a wild pitch to increase the lead to three. The Golden Knights had a strong showing in the fifth when they added two runs on three hits and an error to set the score at 5-4.

It remained a one-run game until the bottom of the sixth as Fairmont State had another strong offensive frame. The scoring started when Cameron Sheets singled to score Quintin Smith. Two at-bats later, Hudson Smith followed with an RBI single of his own. Micah Canterbury and Zach Brennan both drove in a run to push FSU in front by five runs (9-4).

Unfortunately, Gannon's offense exploded in the seventh. The guests posted 10 runs on six hits, and three walks as the inning included a grand slam. With a five-run lead of their own, the Golden Knights added two runs in the eighth and ninth innings. Cameron Hines brought home the final Falcon run as Quintin Smith scored on the sacrifice fly.

On the day, Sheets went 3-5 from the plate with two runs and driving in another. Quintin Smith, Hudson Smith, Canterbury, Sabatino and Brennan each finished the day with multiple hits.

Fairmont State ventures to Institute, West Virginia on Saturday, March 23 to face West Virginia State University. Game one is set to start 1:00 p.m.
