Institute, W.Va. - The Fairmont State University baseball team continued its conference schedule against South Division foe, West Virginia State University. The Falcons fell to the Yellow Jackets in both games, 7-6 in extra innings and 2-1 in game two.
Game One: West Virginia State 7, Fairmont State 6 (10 Inn.)
Fairmont State jumped in front in the top of the second inning when
Ryan Goff singled through the left side as
Vince Sabatino and
Zach Brennan scored. West Virginia State quickly responded in the bottom half as a run scored on a ground ball to second base.Â
The Falcons held on to the slim lead until the bottom of the fifth when the Yellow Jackets evened the game with a sacrifice fly to left. The tied game did not last long as
Cameron Hines stole third and advanced home on a throwing error by the catcher.
Micah Canterbury added to the advantage with an RBI single as
Quintin Reep scored with FSU leading 4-2.
In the bottom of the seventh, Fairmont State seemed posed to take the win as it had two outs with a runner on first. Unfortunately, West Virginia State lifted a ball over the left center wall to tie the game.
The two teams remained tied at four until the top of the ninth as
Hudson Smith scored for the Falcons on a wild pitch. Down to its final out once more, the Yellow Jackets squared the game with solo homer to right center. The Yellow Jackets eventually worked the bases loaded but a ground ball ended the threat as the game ventured to the 10th.
Fairmont State recaptured the lead in the 10th as
Connor Bailey singled through the right side as
Tyler Haskins crossed home. Just like the ninth, West Virginia State tied the game with a solo home run. The hosts reached on an error and after a wild pitch, they were able to walk the game off with an RBI single up the middle.Â
Game Two: West Virginia State 2, Fairmont State 1
The second half of the twinbill was a total opposite compared to game one as it was a pitchers dual. In the first three innings, the two teams combined for four hits until
Quintin Smith homered to right field to put the the Falcons in front.
West Virginia State quickly tied the game with an RBI ground ball. The score remained locked at one apiece until the bottom of the sixth when an RBI double to right center put the Yellow Jackets ahead 2-1.
Fairmont State was down to its final three outs as
Quintin Smith led the inning off with a single. Unfortunately, he was stranded there with the home team taking both games.
Despite the result,
Connor Tingler threw 5.1 innings allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits while striking out two.
Fairmont State remains on the road on Sunday, March 24 as it faces the Charleston Golden Eagles for two games. Start time is set for 1:00 p.m. for game one.
