FSU Earns Two over West Virginia Wesleyan

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. - The Fairmont State University softball team started Mountain East Conference play against West Virginia Wesleyan. The Falcons claimed wins in both games, 5-3 and 5-0.

Game One: Fairmont State 5, West Virginia Wesleyan 3

Fairmont State opened the scoring in the top of the first as Peyton Wetherholt hit a sacrifice fy to right field as Bella Hess scored. West Virginia Wesleyan answered with a sacrifice fly of its own and an RBI single to take a 2-1 lead. 

In the third, the Falcons recaptured the lead when Courtney Moyer singled to bring home Hannah Workman and Emily Riggs. The next at-bat, Kamilla Slayton singled to drive in Wetherholt as the visitors now led 4-2.

The Bobcats added a run in the fourth with an RBI ground out but FSU swiftly responded in the fifth when Slayton drove in her second run of the game as Riggs scored. 

Over the final three innings, Alyssa McCormick held the hosts to just one hit to secure the win. McCormick pitched all seven innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits with two strikeouts.

Game Two: Fairmont State 5, West Virginia Wesleyan 0

The second game was all Falcons as Workman reached on a fielder's choice as Alexa Andrews scored. Later in the third, Riggs doubled to drive in Workman and Hess. Riggs scored on a Moyer single to put FSU ahead 4-0.

Fairmont State scored its final run in the sixth when Delaney Haller singled to plate Moyer. On the other side, Haller was dominate in the circle, holding West Virginia Wesleyan to just two hits as she struck out six batters and faced 24 batters. 

Fairmont State (15-5, 2-0) will face Davis and Elkins on Sunday, March 17. The doubleheader will be played at Duvall-Rosier Field with the Senators still being the home team. Game one is set to start at 1:00 p.m.
