FAIRMONT, W.Va. - The Fairmont State University softball team faced Davis & Elkins College. Due to the rain a few days prior, the doubleheader was played at Duvall-Rosier Field with the Falcons as the visiting squad. The teams battled in extra innings for both games with the Senatos taking game one with the Falcons capturing the second game.
Game One: Davis & Elkins 7, Fairmont State 6 (8 Inn.)
In the bottom of the first, Davis & Elkins took the early lead with a two-run homer. The Senators doubled their lead in the second with single.
Fairmont State trailed by four until the top of the fourth when
Alexa Andrews drew a walk with the bases loaded to bring home
Kamilla Slayton. The next at-bat,
Abbie Keilholz singled to center field to drive in
Katy Darnell and
Courtney Moyer to make it a 4-3 game.
In the fifth,
Peyton Wetherholt tied the game with a double to center field as
Hannah Workman crossed home. D&E went back in front in the bottom half of the inning as a run scored on a ground out.
The Falcons quickly responded in the sixth as
Jaylin McGill hit a sacrifice fly as Andrews tagged up. With the bases loaded, Wetherholt hit an infield single to give FSU the 6-5 edge.
It came down to the bottom of the seventh as the Senators were looking at least force extra innings. The home team did just that with an RBI single.
Fairmont State was able to get a runner in scoring position but were unable to take the lead. In the bottom half of the frame, the Senators loaded the bases and on a ground ball the Falcons tried to get the out at home but were unsuccessful as D&E walked it off.
Game Two: Fairmont State 8, Davis & Elkins 5 (9 Inn.)
The Falcons quickly jumped out in front when Wetherholt scored on a wild pitch. From there, Davis & Elkins started to take over as it scored five runs over the next four innings.Â
In the top of the fifth, Workman stole second and on the throw, Keilholz score to cut the deficit to three (5-2). Fairmont State kept the momentum going in the sixth as Andrews doubled to left field to bring home Moyer and Slayton. The next at-bat, Keilholz evened the game at five with an RBI single to right field.
Both teams had chances in the seventh and eighth innings but were unable to capitalize. In the top of the ninth, Slayton lifted a ball to right as Workman scored. Moyer followed with an RBI single to center.
Elizabeth Waszkiewicz capped off the scoring with an RBI single to left to plate Moyer.Â
The Senators had a chance in the bottom of the ninth with runner at third but the chance was stranded as the Falcons picked up the win.
Fairmont State (16-6, 3-1) will host Frostburg State University on Wednesday, March 20 at Duvall-Rosier Field. Game one is set to start at 2:00 p.m.
