Softball Sweeps Frostburg State in Blustery Conditions

FAIRMONT, W.Va. - The Fairmont State University softball team hosted Frostburg State University in early Mountain East Conference showdown. As both teams dealt with winds over 20 miles per hour, the Falcons swept the Bobcats, 7-2 and 10-7.

Game One: Fairmont State 7, Frostburg State 2

Fairmont State quickly jumped ahead when Emily Riggs hit a three-run homer to center field. Later in the inning, Katy Darnell doubled to left center as Kamilla Slayton scored to put the home side up, 4-0.

The Falcons added to its total in the second as Abbie Keilholz homered to left center. Frostburg State got on the board in the top of the third with an RBI double to right center.

Scoring was halted until the bottom of the fourth as Hannah Workman singled up the middle to plate Bella Hess and Alexa Andrews. In the sixth inning, the Bobcats scored the final run of the game with an RBI single to left field.

In the circle, Delaney Haller posted another strong performance. The freshman pitcher threw another complete game, allowing two runs (all earned) on six hits with five strikeouts, improving her record to 8-1 on the year.

Game Two: Fairmont State 10, Frostburg State 7

Just like game one, it was the Falcons to score first as Riggs brought home Hess with a ground ball. In the next at-bat, Peyton Wetherholt laid down a but for an infield single as Workman scored. Courtney Moyer kept the momentum going with an RBI single up the middle as Wetherholt crossed home.

The Falcons remained in front, 3-0, until Frostburg State scored a run on a fielder's choice. The visitors trailed until its offense broke out in the top of the fifth with a five-run inning on four hits, two walks and an error.

The Bobcats lead was short-lived as Fairmont State began to build momentum when Breonna Marietta reached on a single as Kensy Thomas scored. Next at-bat, Riggs doubled to left center to drive in Workman. After an infield single by Grace Sobeck, Moyer grounded out as Riggs crossed home and evened the score at six. Darnell closed the scoring with an RBI single to left center.

In the sixth inning, Sobeck put the final stamp on the game with a three-run blast over straight-away center to make it a 10-6 game. Frostburg State looked to rally in the seventh as it scored on a single through the left side. Following another single, the visitors had runners on first and second with no outs.

Haller was called upon to close out the game and started with a strikeout. The next batter grounded out to Mikayla Moore at first to mover the runners up a base but with two outs. Haller forced a slow chopper back to her to close out the game and secure the sweep.

Coming off the bench, Sobeck went 2-2 with three runs batted in and scoring twice. Keilholz and Hess were the other Falcons with multiple hits in the second game. Alyssa McCormick picked up the win while Haller earned a save.

Fairmont State (18-6. 5-1) faces Salem University in a non-conference matchup on Saturday, March 23. Game one is set to begin at 12:00 p.m.
