BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. - The Fairmont State University softball team faced Salem University in a non-conference battle. The Falcons were able to capture wins in both games, 6-5 and 9-0.
Game One: Fairmont State 6, Salem 5
Salem claimed the early lead in the second inning by scoring a runs on consecutive hits. Trailing 2-0, Fairmont State responded as
Katy Darnell singled to score
Mikayla Moore.Â
Still in the third,
Courtney Moyer delivered a single as Darnell and
Bella Hess crossed home to put the Falcons in front, 3-2. The lead was short-lived as the Tigers tied the game in their half of the third.
The game remained even at three until the top of the fifth when
Breonna Marietta doubled to drive in Hess. Just like the third, Salem answered and even took the lead on a sacrifice fly.
Down 5-4, FSU was down to its final three outs as
Emily Riggs tied the game once more with an RBI single as Hess scored. Later in inning,
Breonna Marietta grounded out as
Sydney Emanuel was able to race home and give the visitors a 6-5 lead..Â
As for the Tigers, the ball did not leave the infield as they popped out and hit two ground balls to close out the game.
Alyssa McCormick picked up the win, pitching 2.1 innings in relief and allowing just one hit and walk.
Game Two: Fairmont State 9, Salem 0 (6 Inn.)
The second was completely dominated by the Falcons and starting pitcher,
Delaney Haller. Haller threw a complete game, shutout as she threw six innings and only gave up two hits with nine strikeouts.
Fairmont State opened the scoring in the first when Darnell singled to plate Hess. Darnell later drove in another run, this time in the second, as
Kae Compton scored.Â
In the fifth, Moyer drove in two runs with a single as Emanuel and
Alexa Andrews crossed home. The Falcons closed out the game in the sixth as they scored five runs on four hits for the win.
Fairmont State (20-6) faces Mountain East and North Division foe, Notre Dame College on Monday, March 25. Game one is set for a 12:00 p.m. start.
