SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio - The Fairmont State University softball trekked to Ohio to face the other Falcons of the Mountain East Conference, Notre Dame College. After a bit of back-and-forth in game one, Fairmont State won the game, 11-6, before shutting out the hosts in game two, 6-0.
Game One: Fairmont State 11, Notre Dame 6
Fairmont State quickly jumped out in front in the first inning as
Emily Riggs hit a home run to center field as
Hannah Workman was on base for the 2-0 lead. Notre Dame answered in its half of the inning with a two-run double and eventually took the lead with another RBI double.Â
The home team added to its lead in the bottom of the second with a single down the right field line. In the top of the third, FSU responded as
Peyton Wetherholt drew a walk with the bases loaded.
Courtney Moyer tied the game with a sacrifice fly to left as
Bella Hess tagged up from third.Â
Notre Dame quickly went back in front as it scored on a wild pitch in the third. NDC added to its total in the fourth with an RBI single but the visitors were ready in the fifth. FSU loaded the bases with one out as
Katy Darnell stepped in the box. On the very first pitch she saw, Darnell launched the ball to left field for the grand slam and the 8-6 lead.
Alexa Andrews finished off the scoring in the inning with an RBI single as
Grace Sobeck crossed home.
Fairmont State rounded out the scoring in the sixth when Riggs and Workman scored on a Sobeck single. The hosts accumulated one hit in the final two innings as FSU held on for the five-run win. Riggs went 2-3 for the game with two RBI and three runs.
Jordan Popowski picked up the win, going 4.2 innings in relief with one run (earned) on three hits.
Game Two: Fairmont State 6, Notre Dame 0
Just like the first game, Fairmont State jumped out to an early lead when Wetherholt singled through the left side to score Workman. Darnell followed with a single of her own as Moyer and Riggs crossed home. Wetherholt scored the final run as Sobeck reached on an error.
Leading 4-0, FSU added a run in the second thanks to a Moyer single up the middle. The final run was tallied in the seventh as Sobeck scored on a
Kamilla Slayton single down the right field line.
As for the other side of the field,
Delaney Haller continued her stellar performance in the circle. The freshman pitcher threw her ninth complete game and fourth shutout, allowing just four hits with six strikeouts.
Fairmont State (22-6, 7-1) returns to Duvall-Rosier Field on Friday, March 29 for a doubleheader against Wheeling University. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
