FAIRMONT, W.Va. - The Fairmont State University softball team faced the Wheeling University Cardinals. The Falcons were able to sweep the doubleheader, winning 9-5 and 9-1.
Game One: Fairmont State 9, Wheeling 5
Fairmont State had its chance in the first inning with a runner advancing to third but were unable to score. The Falcons did get on the board in the second when
Alexa Andrews homered to left center for the 2-0 lead.
Wheeling responded by scoring two runs in the third with an RBI single and a sacrifice fly. FSU quickly claimed the lead in the bottom half as
Peyton Wetherholt singled to right field as
Emily Riggs and
Hannah Workman crossed home plate. Going to the fourth, the home side led 4-2.
In the fourth inning,
Abbie Keilholz singled right up the middle to bring home Andrews and
Grace Sobeck to expand the difference to four (6-2). Fairmont State kept the momentum going in the fifth as Riggs drew a walk and tried to advance to second. During the run down, Workman broke for home and slid in safely while Riggs was able to make it to second.
The Cardinals started to make the game interesting as they scored two runs on a single through the right side. An RBI single later in the inning to cut the deficit down to two runs (7-5). In the bottom half of the sixth, the Falcons scored the final two runs including an RBI single to right field.
As Wheeling was down to its final three outs, the visitors were able to have runners on second and third with no outs. However, two ground balls and a line out to first, FSU was able to capture the opening game win.
Workman finished the game with three hits and scoring three times.
Alyssa McCormick picked up the win while
Jordan Popowski earned the save.
Game Two:Â Fairmont State 9, Wheeling 1 (6 Inn.)
Wheeling opened the scoring in the first inning with an RBI single down the left field line. In the bottom half, Riggs singled to score
Bella Hess while Riggs later scored in the inning for the 2-1 lead.
Riggs added to the lead in the third with an RBI double as Hess crossed home. Fairmont State added to its lead in the fifth as it scored three runs on two hits and two walks.
Leading 6-1, the Falcons looked to close out the game in the sixth.
Sydney Emanuel scored on a wild pitch before
Mikayla Moore scored on a wild pitch. As
Kamilla Slayton hit a fly ball to right, the outfielder's throw was off target. Elizabeth Wasziewicz took advantage and scored for the eight-run win.
Delaney Haller posted another strong outing, throwing a complete game and allowing just the lone run on four hits with four strikeouts.
Fairmont State hosts West Liberty University on Saturday, March 30 at Duvall-Rosier Field. Game one is set for 10:00 a.m.
