FAIRMONT, W.Va. - The Fairmont State University softball team hosted West Liberty University on Senior Day. The Falcons were able to a walk it off in both games, 1-0 and 5-4.
Game One: Fairmont State 1, West Liberty 0 (8 Inn.)
The first game was a pitchers dual as both prevented a run from scoring until extra innings. Both teams had several chances but were unable to capitalize as the Falcons tried to force a run down in the second but were unable to get a run across before the final out.Â
Fairmont State had runners in scoring position in each of the next five innings but were unable to get a run across. In the bottom of the eighth,
Courtney Moyer drove the ball down the right field line for a lead-off triple. After an infield single by
Alexa Andrews,
Isabella Yelle singled to center field for the win.
In the circle,
Delaney Haller pitched a complete game, shutout as she only allowed two hits while striking out five.
Game Two: Fairmont State 5, West Liberty 4
In the second game, the Falcons grasped the early lead in the first as
Peyton Wetherholt singled up the middle to bring home
Hannah Workman.
FSU held the advantage until the top of the third when West Liberty drew a walk with the bases loaded before an RBI single to right field. The visitors' lead was short-lived as Workman scored on a passed ball in the bottom half of the inning. Riggs also scored on a sacrifice fly off Wetherholt's bat.
The Hilltoppers evened the game at three in the sixth inning as they scored on a wild pitch. However, Wetherholt scored on a wild pitch in the bottom half as the home side led 4-3 going to the seventh.
West Liberty quickly responded and tied the game once more, this time on a home run to left center.
Alyssa McCormick was able to get the next three batters out as the Falcons were set on another walk off.
Grace Sobeck delivered just that with a lead off home run over the center field wall for the 5-4 win.
