Fairmont State Fends Off Bobcats and Delays for Sweep

FAIRMONT, W.Va. - The Fairmont State University baseball team hosted West Virginia Wesleyan College in a cross-division battle within the Mountain East. Battling rain and weather delays, the Falcons swept the series, 5-1 and 5-4.

Game One: Fairmont State 5, West Virginia Wesleyan 1

The opening game between the two squads started off quietly until the bottom of the second when Zach Brennan singled to bring home Vince Sabatino and Quintin Reep. With a 2-0 lead, Cameron Moore added to it with an RBI double as Brennan crossed home.

Fairmont State added to its lead in the fourth with a Ryan Goff single as Brennan scored for the second time in the game. As FSU led 4-0 going to the fifth, rain had made its way over the field causing a lengthy delay.

Out of the break, Evan McDade took over on the mound for the starter, Zane Loveday. In the bottom of the sixth, Quintin Smith drove in the final Falcon run as Moore scored on the single. West Virginia Wesleyan scored its lone run in the seventh with a home run but McDade forced a strikeout to end the game.

Loveday picked up the win, going four innings and allowing just one hit. McDade earned the save with three innings of relief, giving up the lone run on two hits and three strikeouts.

Game Two: Fairmont State 5, West Virginia Wesleyan 4

Both starting pitchers in the second game seemed to find a groove early until the third inning. The Bobcats claimed the early advantage with an RBI double to left field. A sacrifice fly followed by a wild pitch saw the visitors jump ahead, 3-2.

The Falcons were not deterred by this as they had runners on second and third with one out. Goff hit a ground ball to third base but the fielder's errant throw ricocheted off the Falcon helmet and down the right field line. This allowed Brennan and Tyler Haskins to score. Goff later scored in the inning off a Cameron Sheets ground out to tie the game at three.

The score remained 3-3 until the bottom of the fifth when Quintin Smith beat out an infield ground ball as Brennan scored to hand Fairmont State its first lead of the game.

In the seventh inning, West Virginia Wesleyan had runners on first and third with two outs. It looked like the home side was poised for the win but a wild pitch allowed the visitors to even the game at four.

Neither side was able to push a run across in the eighth but the Bobcats had runners on the corners with just one out in the ninth. However, Ben Taylor got a strikeout and a fly ball to left to end the threat.

Fairmont State and Noah Canterbury led the bottom half off with a double down the right field line. As Connor Bailey pinch ran, Quintin Reep laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Bailey to third. After two intentional walks to load the bases, Brennan stepped to the plate.

Brennan hit a slow roller towards third base, the fielder gathered the ball and attempted to throw out Bailey at home. However, the throw was too high for the catcher as the Falcons were able to capture the 5-4 win and the series sweep.

Fairmont State now faces California University of Pa. in a non-conference game on Tuesday, April 2 from Wild Things Park in Washington, Pa. Start time is set for 3:00 p.m.
