Baseball Splits with Salem in First Doubleheader

SALEM, W.Va. - The Fairmont State University baseball team played its first two of a four-game series against the Salem University Tigers. The Falcons captured the first game, 2-0, before falling in game two, 4-3.

Game One: Fairmont State 2, Salem 0

The first game was a pitchers dual as both teams were able to get a runner on but neither one advanced to scoring position. In the top of the second, Fairmont State broke through when Quintin Reep homered to bring home Noah Canterbury for the 2-0 lead.

Salem pieced two one-out singles in the bottom half of the inning but a fly ball followed by a grounder ended the chance for the Tigers. From there, Will Knight settled into a groove and did not give a up over the final five innings.

The hosts did have two hit batters hit by a pitch but neither one advanced further than second. FSU was able to secure the 2-0 win.

Knight throwing a complete game with three hits, also struck out four batters in the win. Besides Reep and Noah Canterbury, Micah Canterbury and Vince Sabatino collected the other hits for the Falcons.

Game Two: Salem 4, Fairmont State 3

Fairmont State wasted little time to take the lead as Quintin Smith hit a solo shot. Salem quickly responded with a two-run homer in its half of the first.

The Tigers added to their lead in the second with a sacrifice fly and an RBI single to open a three-run (4-1) advantage. Smith delivered once more for the Falcons in the third with a double as Cameron Moore and Tyler Haskins scored.

FSU was able to get a runner on second in the fourth and fifth innings but were unable to capitalize. In the sixth, the visitors were able to load the bases with just one out but that was it. A fielder's choice followed with a fly ball to center ended the opportunity.

Down to the final three outs, the Falcons had runners on first and second with one out but a ground ball, double play closed out the game as the Tigers won by the one-run margin.

Connor Tingler started on the mound for FSU, going five innings, allowing four runs (all earned) on seven hits with three strikeouts.

Fairmont State concludes its four-game series against Salem University on Sunday, April 7. Game one is set to start at 1:00 p.m.
