SALEM, W.Va. - The Fairmont State University baseball team wrapped up its four-game series against Salem University. The Falcons fell in both games to the Tigers, 8-4 and 7-6.
Game One: Salem 8, Fairmont State 4
Salem claimed the early lead in the first inning with a sacrifice fly. Fairmont State answered in the top of the second as
Cameron Sheets homered to even the game at one.Â
The game did not remain tied for long as the Tigers added three runs on three hits to lead 4-1. It took until the fourth for the Falcons to score as
Quintin Smith came home on a balk.
The home side added to its total in the fifth with an RBI single before adding another three runs in the sixth to lead 8-2.
Down to its final three outs, FSU loaded the bases and a walk by
Cameron Moore brought home
Vince Sabatino. The next at-bat,
Ryan Goff lifted a ball to center field as
Tyler Haskins tagged up to make it an 8-4 game. Unfortunately, the threat ended there as Salem claimed the four-run game.
Game Two: Salem 7, Fairmont State 6
The Tigers repeated their effort in game two as they opened a 2-0 lead with a home run. They added another run in the second to jump ahead by three runs (3-0).
It took until the top of the fourth for the Falcons to get on the board as
Quintin Reep singled to bring home
Micah Canterbury. Salem answered with an RBI single in the fourth to back in front by three (4-1).
Fairmont State's offense got its footing in the sixth with a sacrifice fly off the bat of Goff. A few batters later,
Zach Brennan homered as Reep was on base to even the score at four. After holding the home side scoreless, FSU looked to capture the lead.
With the bases loaded,
Noah Canterbury delivered with a single as Sheets and Smith scored. Despite there being no outs, the Falcons were unable to get another run across the plate.
In the final scheduled half inning, the Tigers pulled within one with an RBI double. Down to the last out, single out of the infield tied the game at six. Then a double allowed the hosts to walk off the game and take the series.
Fairmont State is set to travel to Pennsylvania to face Seton Hill University on Tuesday, April 9. Start time is set for 3:00 p.m.
