FAIRMONT, W.Va. - Connor Tingler threw a no-hitter Saturday evening in the second game of the day against Notre Dame College. Fairmont State bested the other Falcons of the MEC, 5-4 and 3-0.
Game One: Fairmont State 5, Notre Dame 4
In the first game, FSU jumped out to the early lead with an RBI single to left field off the bat of
Noah Canterbury. Later in the inning,
Quintin Reep was hit with a pitch as the bases were loaded to give the home team a 2-0 lead.
Notre Dame got on board in the top of the second with an RBI single to left field. The hosts regained a two-run lead in the third as
Ryan Goff brought home
Cameron Sheets with a single to right field.
The visitors quickly cut into the difference in the fourth and a home run to right center. However, Fairmont State and
Noah Canterbury hit a two-run homer in the botton half of the inning to lead 5-2.
In the sixth, Notre Dame added a run in the top of the sixth with an RBI double to left center. The visitors scored a run in the seventh on a wild pitch but
Mac Schnur closed out the game for the one-run win.
Will Knight started on the mound, picking up the win in 5.1 innings. He allowed three runs (all earned) on five hits while striking out five.
Game Two: Fairmont State 3, Notre Dame 0
The second game was a gem on the mound by
Connor Tingler. Tingler did not allow a base runner until the top of the fifth inning with a walk. The runner was later caught stealing by a
Tyler Haskins throw as
Vince Sabatino laid down the tag.
At this point, Fairmont State led 3-0 thanks to a Sheets home run and back-to-back RBI plays in the third as
Quintin Smith and Canterbury drove in th runs.
Following a 1-2-3 sixth, Tingler made the walk from the dugout to the mound looking to secure the no-hitter. Following a lead off strikeout, the freshman pitcher allowed two walks.
A fielder's choice put runners on the corners with two outs. On the very first pitch of the at-bat, a hot shot was hit towards first base. Sheets knocked the ball down and stepped on first for the first no-hitter since the 2016 season.
Despite the three walks, Tingler struck out six while only facing 23 batters on 92 pitches.
Fairmont State concludes its series against Notre Dame on Sunday, April 14 from the Bridgeport Recreation Complex. Game one is set for 12:00 p.m.
