FAIRMONT, W.Va. - The Fairmont State University baseball team looked to complete the four-game sweep of Notre Dame College. After claiming a 10-inning victory, FSU won by nine in game two for the series sweep.
Game One: Fairmont State 10, Notre Dame 9 (10 Inn.)
Just as the game was getting underway, Notre Dame took the lead with a home run to center field. Fairmont State quickly answered in its half of the inning as
Noah Canterbury singled through the right side to bring home
Connor Bailey.
FSU kept the momentum going in the bottom of the second when
Ryan Goff homered to left field as
Quintin Reep scored. Later in the inning,
Vince Sabatino scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of
Cameron Moore.
Quintin Smith later followed suit with a two-run homer over the right field fence.
Leading 6-1,
Cameron Sheets added to the total with a solo shot to right field. Notre Dame, however, did not back down. Two RBI hits in the fourth made it a 7-3 game.
The visitors had seized the momentum and added a run in the fifth with an RBI single. Notre Dame completed the comeback in the sixth as it scored three runs on three hits to even the score at seven.
As the game ventured into extra innings, both pitchers seemed to find a groove until the top of the 10th when NDC to the lead on a sacrifice fly. It later added another run on an RBI hit to lead 9-7 going to the bottom half.
Sheets led the inning off with a walk to jump start FSU. Following a
Micah Canterbury double, Reep lifted a ball to center field that allowed the runner to tag and score. Goff followed with a sacrifice fly of his own to even the game at nine.
Sabatino was able to reach first base thanks to a wild pitch on a strikeout. Moore singled as
Tyler Haskins drew a walk to load the bases. After a pitching change, Smith stepped in and singled to right field for the walk-off win, 10-9.
Game Two: Fairmont State 12, Notre Dame 3
The second game was complete different to the first as Fairmont State plated seven runs in the first on six hits and two hit by pitches, which became a theme of the game.
Notre Dame was able to score two runs in the second but the home side had an answer. Both Goff and Sabatino were hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to expand the lead back to seven (9-2).
In the fourth, Sabatino once again was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score Reep. Moore kept it going with a walk as Bailey brought home the final FSU run with a sacrifice fly to center.
The visitors added a run in the seventh but the deficit was too much as Fairmont State won by the nine-run margin.
Logan McClure earned the win, going six innings as he allowed two runs (earned) on six hits and striking out eight. A total of seven hit by pitches occured with Goff being hit three times while Reep and Sabatino were hit twice.
Fairmont State is set for a non-conference tilt with the California University of Pennsylvania on Tuesday, April 16. Start time is set for 3:00 p.m.
