FAIRMONT, W.Va. - The Fairmont State University baseball team faced California University of Pennsylvania in a weekday matinee. After leading for a majority of the game, the Falcons fell to a Vulcans comeback in the eighth inning and ultimately, the final score of 14-10.
California opened the contest with a lead-off home run to right field. In the bottom half, Fairmont State got on the board when
Noah Canterbury singled up the middle to drive-in
Connor Bailey. Later in the frame,
Ryan Goff singled to center to bring home Canterbury and
Quintin Smith as the home side led 3-1.Â
In the third, the Vulcans struck again with a lead-off homer off the bat of Conor Carney for his second of the contest. Moving to the fourth inning, the visitors squared the game at three when a Colby Rockacy was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Carney continued to produce runs for CalU as he reached on a fielder's choice and collecting his third RBI.
FSU tied the game once more in the bottom half of the fourth with a
Cameron Moore RBI single to center. Carrying the momentum, Smith hit one into the hole between short and third to bring home another run and give the hosts a 5-4 edge. Canterbury expanded the difference when his single to shallow left field allow two more runs to score.Â
The long ball continued to work for the Vulcans as they narrowed it to a one-run (7-6) game with a two-run blast over the left field fence. Clinging to the lead, the Falcons offense went to work in the sixth as Canterbury once again delivered an RBI hit.
Cameron Sheets got in on the action with a sacrifice fly to center as Smith tagged from third. Goff completed the scoring plays in the frame with an RBI double as Canterbury made it home safely from second.
Trailing 10-6, CalU was not going away as it scored on a sacrifice fly in the seventh, The next at-bat, the guests made it a two-run (10-8) game with an RBI single up the middle.Â
In the eighth, the visitors started the inning with two hit by pitches and a walk to loaded the bases. With one swing of the bat, the Vulcans captured the lead, 12-10, on the teams third home run of the game. The visitors added two more runs in the ninth on a sacrifice fly to deep center.
The Falcons were not muster a rally in the ninth and fell by the four-run difference.Â
Fairmont State is set to open a four-game series against Wheeling University with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 20 on Senior Day. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
