Falcons Succumb to Cardinals on Senior Day

FAIRMONT, W.Va. - The Fairmont State University baseball team entertained Wheeling University for an evening doubleheader. The Falcons fell to the Cardinals in both games, 18-7 and 6-3.

Game One: Wheeling 18, Fairmont State 7

Fairmont State claimed the early advantage in the first inning when Cameron Sheets singled to right field as Noah Canterbury and Quintin Smith scored. After a Micah Canterbury single, Quintin Reep stepped to the plate and hit a three-run homer over the right field wall to give FSU a 5-0 lead.

Wheeling quickly responded in the second as it scored four runs on four hits and an error to trail only one (5-4). Both pitchers started to find a groove until the top of the fourth where the Cardinals added five runs on four hits including a three-run home run. The visitors led 9-5 going to the fifth inning.

WU kept the momentum going and added two more runs in the sixth before scoring seven runs in the seventh to garner a 13-run (18-5) lead. In the bottom half of the inning, Ryan Goff singled to center field to bring home Vince Sabatino. In the next at-bat, Smith reached on an error that allowed Zach Brennan to score but that is where the Falcons scoring ended as Wheeling captured game one.

Game Two: Wheeling 6, Fairmont State 3

In game two, it was the Cardinals who took the early lead as two runs scored on an infield single. Similar to game one, FSU got on the board in the bottom half of the inning when Cameron Moore scored on a throwing error.

Following a single and a ground out, Sheets hit a ball to right center that one hopped to fence as Smith and Goff scored. The Falcons held the 3-2 lead.

The starting pitchers found a rhythm as both squads were held scoreless until the seventh inning. In the frame, Wheeling tied the game on a sacrifice fly to left field. With one swing in the next at-bat, the visitors recaptured the lead, 4-3.

After a walk, the Cardinals hit a double and a single to bring home two more runs to go ahead by three runs (6-3). Down to its final three outs, FSU was not able to get anything going offensive and fell in the second game.

Fairmont State concludes its four-game series with Wheeling on Sunday, April 21 from Mylan Park in Morgantown. Game one is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
