Delaney Haller Nearly Throws No-Hitter in Sweep of Concord

ATHENS, W.Va. - The Fairmont State University softball team looked to bounce back after back-to-back losses. Behind the stellar pitching of Delaney Haller, the Falcons earned to wins over the Mountain Lions, 2-1 and 4-3.

Game One: Fairmont State 2, Concord 1

In the opening game of the series, Fairmont State grasped the lead in the top of the second when Katy Darnell doubled down the left field line as Courtney Moyer crossed home.

FSU added to its total in the fifth on an Emily Riggs sacrifice fly to center with Grace Sobeck tagging up.

The main story line was the pitching of Delaney Haller. Only two base runners were allowed through the first six innings as neither one reached on a hit. Concord finally recorded a hit in the seventh inning, a home run over the left field fence.

However, Haller shut the door on the Mountain Lions rally for the 2-1 victory. In the complete win, the freshman pitcher struck out five and threw only 80 pitches.

Game Two: Fairmont State 4, Concord 3

The second game was scoreless until the bottom of the third when Concord scored the first run on a double to left center.

It was not until the fifth for the Falcons to get on the board. Moyer scored the first run on a Darnell sacrifice fly to right field. In the sixth, Sydney Emanuel added to the FSU total as she scored on a throwing error. Later in the frame, Moyer drove in two runs with a single through the right side.

Fairmont State nearly had a chance to add to the 4-1 lead in the seventh put left a runner stranded at third. The Mountain Lions started to rally with a lead off homer. Following two infield pop outs, the hosts were down to their final out with a runner on second.

A double to right center brought in another run and made it a 4-3 game. The RBI knock forced the Falcons to call upon Haller to close out the game and she delivered with a strikeout to secure the sweep.

Alyssa McCormick earned the win, going 6.2 innings and allowing three runs (all earned) on six hits with three strikeouts.

Fairmont State remains on the road as it faces Frostburg State on Wednesday, April 17. The first game from Maryland is set for 2:00 p.m.
