Falcons Go 1-1 at Frostburg State

FROSTBURG, Md. - The Fairmont State University softball battled Frostburg State University in a Mountain East Conference showdown. The Falcons captured game one, 5-2, before falling in game two, 3-2.

Game One: Fairmont State 5, Frostburg State 2

In the first game, Fairmont State opened the scoring in the first inning when Courtney Moyer singled to center field as Bella Hess and Hannah Workman scored. The Falcons held the 2-0 lead until the third when Peyton Wetherholt singled to bring home Workman.

Katy Darnell loaded the bases with a single as Alexa Andrews drew a walk to bring home another run. Grace Sobeck plated the final run of the frame with a sacrifice fly to center field.

The 5-0 advantage remained until the bottom of the fifth when Frostburg State got on the board with an RBI double. Another RBI double in the bottom of the sixth looked to bring home two runs but a relay throw from the right to second to home, caught the runner and held it to just one.

Fairmont State looked to add some insurance runs in the seventh but left two runners in scoring position. Dow to their final three outs, the Bobcats were able to get a runner on with one out but a ground ball and a pop-up to third closed out the three-run win.

Delaney Haller picked up her 16th win of the season (16-2), pitching a complete game, allowing two runs (all earned) on seven hits with six strikeouts. At the plate, Workman went 3-4 with two runs.

Game Two: Frostburg State 3, Fairmont State 2

Frostburg State was the first team to score on a sacrifice fly to center field in the bottom of the first. The Bobcats maintained the slim lead until the bottom of the fourth when they added a run on an RBI double.

Still in the fourth, the hosts scored another run on an error to extend the lead to three (3-0). In the fifth, the Falcons were able to get a runner on second with one out but were unable to bring the run across.

In the seventh, Fairmont State started to get the offense going as Darnell scored on a double to right field by Andrews. Andrews advanced to third on the play as there was an error in the outfield. Following the second out of the inning, Abbie Keilholz hit an RBI single to plate Andrews.

Bella Hess drew a walk to put runners on first and second. Workman stepped to the plate and lifted a ball to left field but the outfielder ranged over to make the grab as the Falcons fell 3-2.

Alyssa McCormick went the distance, giving up three runs (one earned) on five hits. Darnell and Andrews each went 2-3 at the plate.

Fairmont State makes its way to the Northern Panhandle of West Virginia to face West Liberty University on Saturday, April 20. First pitch for game one is set for 1:00 p.m.
