WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. - The Fairmont State University softball team looked to complete the four-game sweep of West Liberty University. The Falcons accomplished the feat with 4-0 and 4-3 wins over the Hilltoppers.
Game One: Fairmont State 4, West Liberty 0
In the first inning,
Bella Hess drew a walk to open the game and stole second. With two outs,
Courtney Moyer stepped to the plate and delivered an RBI single to right center to give Fairmont State the 1-0 lead.Â
The Falcons added to their lead in the second when
Alexa Andrews and
Peyton Wetherholt executed a double steal. On the play, the catcher made a throwing error that allowed Wetherholt to score.Â
FSU maintained the two-run advantage until the top of the fifth when Moyer reached on a fielder's choice that brought home
Sydney Emanuel.
Katy Darnell followed with a single through the left side as
Emily Riggs trotted home for the 4-0 lead.Â
West Liberty was able to move a runner in scoring position with one out but two outs by Riggs at third kept the shutout going. The Hilltoppers looked posed to score in the sixth with runners on the corners with no outs. However,
Delaney Haller closed the door on the chance with three-consecutive outs to preserve the 4-0 lead.
In the seventh, the Falcons looked to add some insurance runs with the bases loaded but were unable to bring a run home. The additional run was not needed as Haller forced a 1-2-3 inning for the win.Â
Haller finished the game allowing just six hits with four strikeouts in the complete game, shutout. Moyer finished 2-4 with two RBI while Darnell was also 2-4 from the plate with an RBI.
Game Two: Fairmont State 4, West Liberty 3
Just like game one, Moyer drove in the first run as Hess scored on the RBI single through the right side. Darnell carried the momentum and hit a ball to left center that brought home Riggs. Another double steal, this time by Moyer and Darnell, forced an error that allowed Moyer to score and give Fairmont State an early 3-0 lead.
In the bottom half of the frame, West Liberty scored a run on an RBI single and then a sacrifice fly to make it a one-run game. The Falcons responded in the second as
Grace Sobeck scored on another mistake by the hosts to increase the advantage to two (4-2).
Despite having runners on, neither side was able to add another run over the next two innings. In the bottom of the fifth, the Hilltoppers narrowed the margin to one (4-3) on an RBI single up the middle.Â
West Liberty threatened to score in the sixth as runners made their way to second and third but a fly to left field ended the inning. In the seventh, the hosts had runners on first and second with two outs as Haller was called in the close out the game. The freshman pitcher did just that with an infield pop out for the 4-3 win.
Alyssa McCormick earned the win, going 6.2 innings with three runs (all earned) on eight hits. Haller picked up her fourth save of the season.
Fairmont State (34-10, 17-5) faces Wheeling University on Sunday, April 21 in the final doubleheader against the Cardinals. First pitch is slated for 12:00 p.m.
