FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University women's volleyball team hosted Walsh University in the Joe Retton Arena. On a night when
Josie Skinn reached the 1,000 dig mark in her career, the Falcons bested the Cavaliers in five sets, 3-2.
Prior to the contest, the team honored
Kelsie Dangerfield as she recorded her 1,000th assist over the weekend at the Fairmont State Classic.
In the first set, Walsh (2-2) opened with a 3-0 run before Fairmont State (3-2) responded as
Joey Borelle recorded a kill and an ace along with a kill from
Baylie Ostvig. With the Falcons leading (5-3), the two teams went back-and-forth until the Cavaliers went on a 6-0 run to go ahead, 14-12.Â
Fairmont State responded with an 8-0 run as Ostvig and
Alexa Martin accounted for four of the points. The two squads exchanged points until Borelle notched a kill as the visitors committed an error to end the set, 25-20, with the Falcons going ahead 1-0.
Both teams were evenly matched until the hosts rattled off five-straight with three kills off the hand of Borelle. The Falcons held a seven-point difference until Walsh narrowed it down to three but two kills from Ostvig ended the set, 25-21, and looked to close out the match in three.
Unfortunately, the third set was controlled completely by the Cavaliers as they won 25-16 and forced a fourth set. Each team used small runs of three or four points until the visitors rattled off six-consecutive points to lead 24-18. Borelle notched another kill but Walsh won the final point as the match went to a fifth set.
In the fifth set, Fairmont State grasped the early lead and led 8-4 as the two sides switched ends. After a point by Walsh, the Falcons used a 6-1 run to go ahead 14-6. The Cavaliers got one more point via a block but Martin blocked the final attack to secure the 15-7 set win and the 3-2 match victory.
Ostvig tallied 23 kills with Borelle and Nobbe also finishing with double-digit kills, 19 and 11, respectively. Dangerfield totaled 30 assists as
Belle DeVall added 18 of her own. Defensively, Skinn finished with 24 digs as Borelle had 22 while Martin corralled eight blocks.
Fairmont State heads to Kutztown College for the Kutztown Classic on Friday, September 13 and Saturday, September 14. The Falcons first match is against the University of Bridgeport at 1:00 p.m.
