Women's Volleyball 2-0 After Day One at Kutztown Classic

The Falcons topped Bridgeport, 3-1, before sweeping Kutztown, 3-0.

KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- The Fairmont State University women's volleyball team ventured north to Kutztown University for the host's classic. The Falcons bested the University of Bridgeport in the opening match, 3-1, before upending the home Golden Bears, 3-0.

Match 1: Fairmont State 3, Bridgeport 1

In the opening set of the day, Fairmont State claimed the early lead with kills by Joey Borelle, Josie Nobbe and Baylie Ostvig. The Falcons maintained the lead until Bridgeport went on a 5-0 run and evened the score at 14. Fairmont State slowly pulled itself back in front and eventually claimed the set, 25-20.

Just like in the first, it was FSU that got out to the early advantage but the Knights did not delay in obtaining the lead. They went on a 13-1 run and took a 17-7 lead in the second set. The Falcons tried to cut into the deficit but were unsuccessful as Bridgeport won the set, 25-16.

The third set was a see-saw affair with neither side truly gaining a sizable lead until the Knights held a five-point advantage (14-9). The Falcons chipped away at the difference and pulled within a single-point (21-20) after a block by Alexa Martin and Ostvig. However, it seemed Bridgeport was on the verge of taking the set as it led 24-21 until Fairmont State started to go on a late-run as Ostvig knocked down two points while her, Natalie Zemba and Chloe McDaniel combined for two blocks. Ultimately, the Falcons won the set, 26-24.

Fairmont State was the team to claim the early edge in the fourth set as it was ahead by five points, 17-12. The Knights did not back down as it won eight of the next 10 points and found themselves ahead, 20-19. The two exchanged points until Borelle and Nobbe converted on back-to-back attacks to push the Falcons to match point (24-23). Bridgeport squared the score at 24 before Nobbe and Ostvig put the final stamp on the match with consecutive kills, winning the set, 26-24, and the match, 3-1.

Borelle finished the match with another double-double on the season with 20 kills and 27 digs. Ostvig and Nobbe added double-digit kills, 16 and 15, respectively. Kelsie Dangerfield picked up 33 assists with another 21 coming from Belle DeVall. Defensively, Josie Skinn totaled 28 digs while at the net, Ostvig and Martin each tallied six blocks.

Match 2: Fairmont State 3, Kutztown 0

Start of the second match was similar to the first with Fairmont State garnering a 5-2 lead. Kutztown battled back and claimed a slim lead before the set was even at nine. The Falcons gained complete control with an 8-0 run as Jay Miller accounted for three of the points (2 aces, 1 kill) along with two kills from McDaniel. The two sides matched each other for the remainder of the set as the Falcons won the first, 25-14.

The second set was similar to first at the first but the Golden Bears held the advantage for most of the set. Fairmont State drew even at 13 off an ace from Borelle before the team won eight of the next 10 points as Borelle capped off the 25-18 set win with a successful attack.

Just like the first two sets, the two squads seemed evenly matched but it was the Falcons who pulled away with an 11-1 run with four blocks leading the way. Kutztown tried to mount a rally but two attack errors and a block from Martin and Cayden Anschutz closed out the set (25-15) and the match (3-0).

Borelle once again notched another double-double with 11 kills and 15 digs. Dangerfield and DeVall each had double-digit assists with 19 and 10, respectively. Skinn paced the defense with 19 digs while Gabi Smith led the block party with six.

Fairmont State (5-2) concludes the Kutztown Classic on Saturday, September 14 against Franklin Pierece University. Match time is slated for 4:00 p.m.
